Semantics Driven Illustrative Rendering
نویسندگان
چکیده
Illustrative visualization aims to effectively communicate a specific information. In traditional illustration the choice of appropriate styles and rendering techniques is guided by the intention of the artist. For illustrative volume visualizations it is difficult to specify the mapping between the 3D data and the visual representation. We introduce a layer between data and visual appearance that allows the semantic specification of the visualization mapping. Our framework enables a linguistic formulation of rendering styles and techniques. A fuzzy logic rule base determines the constraints of the resulting interactive illustration. The fuzzy logic is automatically translated into a shader program and is evaluated directly on the GPU. The framework provides high quality illustrations that are guided by the specification of semantic illustration rules. The evaluation of the fuzzy logic on the GPU allows user-guided and viewdependent changes of the resulting illustrations. We show examples of semantics driven illustrative volume rendering at interactive frame rates.

Interaction-Dependent Semantics for Illustrative Volume Rendering
In traditional illustration the choice of appropriate styles and rendering techniques is guided by the intention of the artist. For illustrative volume visualizations it is difficult to specify the mapping between the 3D data and the visual representation that preserves the intention of the user. The semantic layers concept establishes this mapping with a linguistic formulation of rules that di...
متن کاملStyle Transfer Functions for Illustrative Volume Rendering
Illustrative volume visualization frequently employs non-photorealistic rendering techniques to enhance important features or to suppress unwanted details. However, it is difficult to integrate multiple non-photorealistic rendering approaches into a single framework due to great differences in the individual methods and their parameters. In this paper, we present the concept of style transfer f...
متن کاملIllustrative Rendering Techniques for Visualization: Future of Visualization or Just Another Technique?
Illustrative rendering has gone a long way already. While it has been a topic at Eurographics, ACM SIGGRAPH, and other events since the early nineties, it was basically introduced to visualization by Interrante et al. in 1996 [2], and later by Treavett/Chen [3] and by Ebert/Rheingans [1]. At last years IEEE Visualization conference, illustrative rendering for visualization has been identified a...
متن کاملModelling and Optimization of Data-driven Scene Graphs
This article presents data-driven scene graphs, a set of models that address the needs of safety-critical user interfaces design. Data-driven scene graphs merge a description of the user interface behavior as a data-flow program with a description of its graphics content as a hierarchical structure of vector and raster elements. We present a formal description of these models, discuss their sem...
متن کاملIllustrative Rendering of Dense Line Data
We present a technique for the illustrative rendering of 3D line data at interactive frame rates. We create depth-dependent halos around lines to emphasize tight line bundles while less structured lines are de-emphasized. Moreover, the depth-dependent halos combined with depth cueing via line width attenuation increase depth perception, extending techniques from sparse line rendering to the ill...
